Perfect outfits 7 Tips On How To Choose Clothes That Fit You Perfectly
It’s happened to the best of us. You find that gorgeous little item that you just gotta have. You can already imagine yourself strutting in it so you quickly check the size and order it. And when it finally arrives, you can’t wait to try it on…until you do, and the fit is all wrong. You let out a sigh as you book a return.
But let’s not skirt the problem here, ladies. Dressing well and selecting clothes that fit like a glove, requires talking frankly about why our shape and clothes can’t get along. Here are 8 tips that might require an honest look in the mirror — not to judge, but to analyze, so that you can look good and feel even better in what you wear.
1. Buy clothes according to their style and silhouette
Check your closet to see what style and silhouettes you wear most often. Are most of your dresses A-line? Do you always find yourself wearing flared bottoms? Is your wardrobe full of waist cinching tops?
Once you start noticing the commonality in your clothes, you’ll be able to shop smarter online.
2. Find out your exact measurements
Know your Inseam measurement –
Knowing your inseam is useful for buying pants online because you’ll know how long your leg is from your crotch to the end of the pant leg opening. You can figure it out by getting someone to measure your inside leg from the top of your crotch to the base of your ankle bone. Make sure that you’re standing straight and that your feet are hip-width apart.
Know your bust size –
Measure under your pits and around the fullest part of your bust. It is important to keep the tape measure snug and don’t tighten it too much. You’ll know when you are holding the tape too tight when your bust is popping out over the tape. A tight measurement will mean a tight garment.
Know your hip size –
Your hips are likely to be midway between your crotch and your belly button. To measure this yourself you’ll need to record the fullest part of your hips and rear. Make sure that your feet are together and that you leave the measuring tape fairly loose so your dress size doesn’t end up being too small.
Find your natural waistline –
Everyone’s waist height is different, so to know where to find yours you should bend to one side and find your waist’s natural crease. Measuring from the point where your crease is will give you your waist size. Make sure that you don’t tighten the measuring tape too much.
3. Measure yourself in unpadded clothes
When taking your own measurements, it is important that you are wearing the appropriate undergarments. If you record your sizes wearing jeans or a padded bra, then you can easily get measurements that are 1 or 2 sizes bigger than your actual dress size.
4. Evaluate the unique structure of your body
Note the body parts that are the widest/biggest; these are parts that that your garment must fit the best on, because the rest can be taken in with alterations.
Identify where you are the most toned/trim; the fit around these areas should be body hugging and accentuating.

5. When your top and bottoms sizes are different, do this
If you have a fuller body from the waist down, opt for a fit and flare outfits or a fitted top and full A-line or midi skirt that play exactly to your proportions.
On the flip side, if you have a generously proportioned upper body and a slim bottom, look for slim ankle pants topped with tunic or untucked blouse that wrap or drape. The idea is to make the most of what you have and downplay the rest.

6. Find your best-fitting clothes and compare them
Even if the size chart is accurate, it only shows you the closest match to your measurements—not whether an item will fit the way you want. Instead, you’d be better off using some of your favorites clothes as a benchmark. You know what we’re talking about: that on t shirts that fits you perfectly, or that one pair of trouser you’ve never been quite able to find again. Grab your favorites items from your closet, note the style, size, cloth material, and fitting and see how it compares to pieces that you want to buy.

You choose three tops, three bottoms, and three shoes, and challenge yourself to create as many outfit combinations as possible with your selections. The concept began with TikTok creator Rachel Spencer, whose nine-item fall wardrobe went viral last year
- Going in and out of AC vs outside heat
- My suggestion: If your workplace is super freezing, keep a couple of jackets or sweaters there. Choose ones that are neutral and go with lots of outfits. If you have several, you’ll always have something to wear and you can bring one home each week and wash, so they always get rotated.
- Alternatively, if you’re just talking about going in and out of grocery stores or movie theatre’s that are cold, carry a jacket or sweater in your car and tie it around your waist while you’re out and about for an effortless feel but a backup layer.
- Accessorizing – too much or too little
- My Suggestion: I think two jewelry items is always a safe bet. I do earrings and bracelets, or a necklace and bracelets, or earrings and necklaces. I rarely do all three. I also rarely do statement rings, and my regular rings don’t count for me!
- Convincing self to get dressed when you stay home all day
- My suggestion: give yourself a challenge and try getting dressed everyday for a month. If you notice a difference, keep doing it! If you decide at the end of the month that it wasn’t worth the effort, go back to what you’re doing. For me, I feel way more happy and productive and confident, and I’ve just created a habit of getting ready. That doesn’t always mean full makeup or hair, but it means putting on clean clothes and a little makeup, pulling my hair into a bun or brushing it, and that makes a big difference.
- Picking out shoes that balance the outfit
- My suggestion: try on a few shoes! I often try on shoes, thinking they’ll work with an outfit, and then look in the mirror and hate it. Don’t be afraid to try a few and see what feels best. Also think about your activities for the day…does that shoe make sense with your agenda and the weather??
- Different combinations so it isn’t always the same (shorts and t-shirt)
- My suggestion: Accessories! If you’re wearing the same kinds of basics, make an effort to add some accessories to your closet to add interest to your basics. Like a few hats, headbands, or hair clips, or embellished sandals or fun sneakers. Also add earrings or necklaces or bracelets to make it feel fun. And if you look in your closet and everything is plain and simple, think about adding a few better than basic tops to your closet this summer to mix things up.
- Take a good look to a great look
- My suggestion: There are three things that take an outfit to the next level: hair/makeup, shoes, and jewellery. If my hair is a mess and I have no makeup, any outfit looks worse. A little makeup and my hair curled or pulled back in a sleek bun takes it up a notch instantly. Jewellery does the same for me…a statement earring, or a stack of bracelets or a few layered necklaces just add a little sparkle. And for shoes, a pair of nice sandals or cute sneakers are much better than a pair of rubber flip flops or a pair of athletic sneakers.
